What challenges for development do you face in your region?

I recently read an article about the challenges developers face in India.

Which made me wonder about the different conditions and difficulties (or positive conditions) all around the world.

Limited access to learning opportunities or hard to come by tutorials in your native language? Lack of companies where you can learn? I'd like to hear about it!

What's development like in your region?

I'll start off myself:

🇧🇪Belgium

Belgium has three official languages (Dutch, French and German) for just about 10 million inhabitants.
This means a lot of smaller businesses would still need a multilingual website.

The benefit is that their site is easier to translate in more languages once they expand further.
On the other hand, the upfront costs can be quite high: a translator, more content input and a more complex site. This might make the site more expensive for smaller businesses.

Despite English not being an official language of our country, it's still in almost all school curriculums. This comes in quite handy when using tutorials or tools like Laracasts later on.

I'm from Cameroon and due to:

  • Corruption
  • I think all is done with WordPress or PHP. Stacks likes Node, Ruby, Python are less use
  • Lack of meetups, share acknowledges.
  • Lack of Startups with good work culture
  • Lack of client's education on how hard is what we do or what good for their business

Thanks for sharing! Interesting to read the experiences from everyone.

What about internet speed - it is quite allright, or rather hard to get a solid speed or connection?
Also, if internet speed isn't that good in general, do you need to be extra careful about performance as a developer?

Internet speed isn't that poor, The country is using 4G.
The problem is the providers, sometimes you can have interruption without knowing what happened so yeah you must be careful about performance.

One of the biggest problem is also the lazyness of developers, as I said most of the time they use WordPress. But it is changing. I now see many of us building apps with others technologies

Thanks a lot Bert for starting this discussion. It's great to see that more and more of such discussions surface to make people aware of problems and situations people face due to local factors.

Another point that I should have added to my article earlier was how difficult it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle because of all the heat, dust and pollution. Its almost impossible to go out of the house for a walk or a run when the pollution outside is at dangerous levels with temprature soring above 40 degrees celcius.

In the end, this also affects our productivity.

I'm from Iran.

From my perspective, I can mention some of the issues.

First, of the first, lower level of academic education compare to any other options. Most of the developers who I know came from different backgrounds of educations and through practical and self-studies.

Low level of wage in the software development industry in my country. Especially in junior and mid levels.

Issues related to the government's policies. Old regulation and laws that make it hard for a lot of startups to grow.

United State sanctions against Iran, which make it almost impossible for developers from my country to access international jobs and learning opportunities.
