Corbado & VicRoads bring passkeys to almost 5 million Australians

Melbourne, February 27, 2025 – Almost 5 million Victorians can now log into their myVicRoads accounts using passkeys, marking a major milestone for digital identity in Australia. By partnering with passkeys specialist Corbado, VicRoads joins the ranks of major global organizations such as Google, Amazon and PayPal in adopting passkeys as a secure, passwordless authentication method.

As one of the first government agencies in Australia to implement passkeys, VicRoads sets a new standard for secure and user-friendly digital services.

Why VicRoads decided to implement passkeys

By replacing passwords with public-key cryptography, VicRoads reduces the risk of phishing and other online threats.

With this implementation, VicRoads provides a customer-centric login experience where customers authenticate with their fingerprint, facial recognition, a PIN, or swipe pattern, making logins more secure and seamless.

“Digital security is a key priority for VicRoads, and passkeys reflect our dedication to keeping our 4.8m myVicRoads customers’ information safe and delivering a secure and seamless user experience,” said VicRoads Chief Technology Officer, Crispin Blackall.
“Our partnership with Corbado is already proving highly successful, with over 200,000 Passkeys created during our recent pilot,” he said.

VicRoads leads the way in government digital innovation

VicRoads joins Telstra, myGov and UBank as one of the first organizations in Australia to introduce passkeys, positioning itself as a digital leader in public services.

To drive rapid adoption, VicRoads is actively encouraging users to transition from existing authentication methods to passkeys as the preferred login method.

“By going passkey-first, VicRoads is providing its customers with both the highest level of security and the best user experience.” said Vincent Delitz, Managing Director at Corbado.

VicRoads implements passkeys with Corbado, following FIDO industry standards

The passkey implementation was carried out in collaboration with passkey specialist Corbado, a FIDO Alliance member, which provided the underlying technology and guided VicRoads on best practices for implementation and user adoption.

"Passkeys represent a paradigm shift in how we authenticate users to digital identity services," remarked Andrew Shikiar, Chief Executive Officer of the FIDO Alliance.

"VicRoads' adoption of passkeys showcases how government agencies can leverage this industry-wide innovation to protect citizen data while simplifying access to critical services. This is a significant step towards a more secure and efficient digital future for Victoria and beyond."

By rolling out passkeys at scale, VicRoads is leading the way for other government agencies and high-security industries looking to modernize authentication without compromising on security or usability.
