My first Dev.to rant

Don't overthink it, Less is more

7 days before the end of December 2024, I took a break off Facebook and WhatsApp, since those where the platforms I was most active. I left out LinkedIn and twitter.

Reason?

  • I wanted to plan out my life for 2025 to achieve my goals
  • Create a strategy that will work for me
  • Focus on my career transition
  • Draft out posts for linkedin
  • Draft out a routine

It was my first time I was trying to do it, so I found tools that could help, real notebook with a pen, notion and chatgpt.

For the first 3 days, after my morning routine, during free hours and even at night I hop to the process.

  1. I wrote out my ideas in the notebook
  2. Research about the career I would be transitioning into
  3. Made a good conversation with chatgpt using good prompts.

After, I got it all wrong, I made terrible mistakes, I began to use chatgpt more, asked it to draft a content plan for my linkedin and it did, gave me nice ideas

I began to think about how my posts will go through the year, so, I asked to chatgpt to draft the year plans and it did again.

While the response seems great, I figured

  • it doesn't speak me
  • the career transition plan doesn't feel realistic to me

Funny thing, the ideas I wrote in the notebook returned to be the best.

I wanted the perfect plan, perfect strategy, perfect content. When I could have focused and started learning after the 3rd day.

I'm not staying AI is bad...(I'll leave this to another day)

But overthinking made me looked further, leaving out productivity. It prevented me from taking action.

It consumed my energy, and kept me on a loop of thinking and thinking over and over again.

But how do I overcome this? I mediatated and recognised that what I need was to focus on the less things, take decisions and act.

While I have also struggled posting here on dev for over 4 years, wondering it will be appreciated, I have learnt - don't try to perfect things, start, focus on that little idea and embrace growth.

Help like to reach more people

P.S: I am still on my career transition into technical writing, if you are a technical writer or know someone who can help, tag them below...

Yeah, plans made by chatGPT are not good, they never speak to me as well.
What works better is when I ask it to think with me instead of answering, and to just share its thoughts as they come without any filter - it then acts more like a coach, and I get really nice insights.

Good Luck for your journey! 🙂

Okay, that's a good way to go about it.

I'm currently navigating through the technical writing roadmap by roadmap.sh and I found good resource on Hackmamba too.

If you have any other suggestions for good resources or ways that can help me with technical writing, please share them with me, I will be glad to hear from you.
