My greatest win of the week is starting my journey into this dev world! It is the most excited I've been about a career-changing decision. It is the first time ever that I've written a blog and the first time putting myself out there . . . and it feels good! Thanks so much to the Dev team for allowing me to use your platform to share my progress!

CONGRATS, Lynne! Your cousin, @chrisoncode 's tweet welcoming you to the platform was so great, too. DEV is all about supporting programmers along their journey and encouraging shared-learning β€” but it certainly doesn't hurt to have a supportive FAMILY too :)

My talk "Deep dive into Elixir" for ElixirConf was accepted! It's the first time I'll be speaking at a conference. So definitely excited also very nervous! Any speaking tips would be greatly appreciated!

Great memory! I've been to other conferences, but this was the first distributed conference I've attended. I wasn't sure what to expect, but so happy that I went. I know Elixir Conf is also going to be remote, so hope it has the same community feels.

I gave constructive criticism of the latest episode of a podcast I listen to (it was on a subject I've focused on pretty intently for the last year+) which, in hindsight, could have been taken much differently (text is dry, especially since my email was a freaking Tolstoy novel).

Instead, one of the hosts emailed me back thanking me, admitted that they were in a rush and winged it without show notes, said I'd be getting a shout-out in the next episode, and asked if I'd like to be a guest doing another episode on the subject!

I started to earnestly dive into NES game development (in assembly)! I've been reading, taking notes, and working on recreating the game Pong!

I also reduced my time on Twitter and IG last week, and have been steadily replacing that time with books πŸ“š

I just finished my Bachelors Degree, and my senior project was building an NES game! It is really fun, and I'm not quite finished with my game. How are you finding Assembly? My background is primarily web development, so it was a pretty huge (and challenging) departure for me.

I really like it, tbh! I think it's cool to talk almost directly to the computer. Assembly is a lot different than what I'm used to as well (LISP languages); it's challenging for sure, so I'm just taking it one step at a time. The community is welcoming, and the content they produce is so unique: their passion is really infectious and it pushes me to keep going πŸ˜ƒ

I watched the movie Captain Fantastic and it made me disengaged even more with the capitalist ideas of labour. Even the week is an economic construct organized around the idea that in order to have 2 days of rest you need to sell your soul for 5.

I also completed reading Fernando Pessoa’s Book of Disquiet, continued reading from The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, and started reading/listening to Watership Down together with my 8 year old.

Oh and I wrote this:

I adored this movie. Really moving and honestly made me think a lot about how I want to raise my kids one day β€” maybe not exactly like Vigo did in this movie, but I definitely want to borrow certain aspects if I ever decide to have kids.

I started it to ease Gwion's devellopment but it is not tied in any way to this project.

Let' walktrough... πŸ˜„

Hello World

let's write our first litterate progam.

Define program structure

hello_world.c

@[[ Includes ]]
int main(int argc, char** argv) {
  @[[ Print ]]
}

Add Headers

As we need the puts function, we need stdio headers.

Includes

#include <stdio.h&gt

Print function

Print

puts("Hello, World!");

Compile

let's compile hello_world.c.

exec: cc hello_world.c -o hello_world

Yes, there should be no output, and that good news.

Check

Let's look at hello_world.c

exec: cat hello_world.c

#include <stdio.h>

int main(int argc, char** argv) {
  puts("Hello, World!");
}

That's the content of the source file we generated (and compiled).

Test

Then we run it

exec: ./hello_world

Hello, World!

Do we read Hello…

EDIT: I keep forgetting I can use liquid tags in dev.

Finally started a new job, lost my previous due to liquidation. Initially, I was a bit anxious as this is a much environment that startup, but all people were very welcoming. Probably my most significant win this week was to survive the number of meetings I had to attend or organise and even figure out a small problem with Docker.
Next week I have even more meetings so I am chilling this weekend as much as I can.
Good luck to anyone there, it is a tough time but keep your hopes up and keep applying and learning in your spare time. Don't forget to rest regularly and take care of your brain, as well, by taking regular walks.
