I feel that a lot of modern development work these days tends to utilize cloud based architecture. This means you have managed services to solve a variety of issues so the "Service A talks to Service B" mindset works well with a microservices model (enough to where I see even modern Java apps do this). Containers based architecture is also highly popular, which is difficult to fit into a monolithic design pattern. Being able to have small services packed into containers to get the most of out system resources tends to work well from a cost savings perspective.
I'd also say that while Google does handle monolith repos they're also Google and built different than a standard dev shop architecture. Not to mention I've dealt with Google build systems before and... let's just say I sigh a lot. Monoliths are also have the fun of build output requirements (yes, 100GB). Repo pulls are also a nightmare unless you know how to skip history (which even then).
