Have you ever wanted to step into the sandals of a gladiator and battle for glory in an epic Roman arena? Well, now you can with Gladiators Battle, a free-to-play browser-based RPG built with React and Firebase. 🎮
Gladiators Battle combines strategy, collectible cards, mini-games, and a touch of Roman history, creating a unique experience for players. The platform is entirely browser-based—no downloads or installs required. Recently, I launched a Kickstarter campaign to take this project to the next level, and I thought it would be great to share the technical journey behind its creation with the Dev.to community.
What is Gladiators Battle?
Gladiators Battle is more than just a game. It’s a platform that offers:
- +21 mini-games across combat, puzzles, and gambling categories.
- Collectible cards: Players can build decks with unique gladiators, equipment, and action cards.
- RPG progression: Customize your gladiator, join guilds, and climb leaderboards.
- Historical immersion: Explore fun facts and stories about the Roman Empire.
- Community features: A space to promote indie games and weekly raffles for in-game rewards.
But how do you build such a dynamic platform with a one-person development team? Let’s dive into the tech stack and development process.
The Tech Stack
The entire project is powered by:
- React.js: The foundation for the frontend, enabling a modular and scalable architecture.
- Firebase: Backend services for authentication, real-time database updates, and hosting.
- CSS-in-JS (Styled-Components): For responsive design and consistent UI styling.
- React-Spring: Adding smooth animations to enhance user experience.
- Challenges and Solutions
**1. Handling Dynamic Mini-Games
**Each mini-game has its own mechanics, from turn-based combat to puzzles. To manage this complexity:
I built reusable components for shared elements like timers, health bars, and card interactions.
Each mini-game is a separate module, lazy-loaded with React Suspense to reduce initial load times.
**2. Responsive Design Across Devices
**While the game runs perfectly on desktop, mobile presented some challenges due to smaller screen sizes and touch controls.
CSS Grid and Flexbox were used to make layouts flexible.
I’m actively working on optimizing mini-games for touch interactions.
**3. Real-Time Updates
**Features like guild rankings, matchmaking, and card trading require real-time data. Firebase made this seamless by:
Providing real-time database syncing for player stats and leaderboards.
Handling secure user authentication, including anonymous accounts for new players.
**4. Smooth Animations
**Animations play a huge role in making the game feel alive. From flipping cards to combat effects, React-Spring was used to create smooth transitions and immersive effects.
_Why Kickstarter?
_As a solo developer, creating Gladiators Battle has been an incredible journey, but there’s so much more I want to add:
_Multiplayer modes: PvP battles and guild competitions.
_Visual upgrades: Higher-quality sprites and animations.
More mini-games: Expanding the roster to include more variety.
The Kickstarter campaign helps fund these features while offering exclusive rewards like legendary cards and early access.
