The most important thing I learned about productivity while developing an open source productivity app for 8 years

After eight years of working on a productivity app (it's called Super Productivity, if you want to know), you’d think I’d have cracked the code to getting things done. Well, this is not the case, but I'd still like to share the most profound lesson I learned. It's not about fancy workflows or clever hacks—it's about kindness. To yourself, specifically. Yes, you.

Being kind to yourself isn’t just a warm-and-fuzzy idea; it’s the secret sauce for sustainable productivity. Let me explain why.

Why Kindness Matters?

  1. It prevents burnout.
When you treat yourself like a machine, eventually, the gears grind to a halt. Kindness helps you avoid this fate.

  2. It pulls you out of tunnel vision.
Ever been so deep in a task you can’t see the bigger picture? A break born out of self-kindness can help you step back and regain perspective.

  3. It fosters a healthy, relaxed attitude.
Stress might light a short-term fire under you, but a calm mind leads to better decisions and long-term results.

  4. It makes you more resilient.
If you're kind to yourself you will likely face challenging situations more calmly and confidently giving you room to act.

  5. It opens the door to curiosity and experimentation.
Being kind to yourself encourages you to explore different productivity methods without fear of failure. This is where growth happens!

What Does It Mean to Be Kind to Yourself?

  1. Don’t pressure yourself to be productive all the time.
Consistency is great, but expecting perfection? Unrealistic. Everyone has ebbs and flows.

  2. Accept that motivation comes and goes.
Even the most passionate people have off days. Give yourself permission to rest.

  3. Take care of your mental and physical health.
Think of yourself as an athlete. Even Olympians prioritize recovery. You should too.

The Domino Effect of Kindness

When you’re kind to yourself, something magical happens: it becomes easier to be kind to others. This turns you into a better teammate, collaborator, and friend. Suddenly, the people around you are more relaxed and open too. The positive vibes you give off? They’re contagious.

How to Actually Be Kind to Yourself

If this all sounds good in theory, but you’re unsure how to put it into practice, here are a few tips:

  • Give yourself grace when you don't meet your expectations.
Life happens. Do what you can and move forward.

  • Schedule breaks—and honor them.
Productivity isn’t about non-stop grinding. It’s about balance.

  • Treat self-care as non-negotiable.
A healthy body supports a healthy mind. Sleep, eat well, and stretch those legs.

  • Celebrate small wins.
Finished one tiny thing on a huge to-do list? That’s worth a cheer.

The Bottom Line

Productivity isn’t just about output—it’s about sustainability. Being kind to yourself isn’t just a nice idea; it’s a strategic advantage. So, the next time you’re tempted to power through exhaustion or criticize yourself for a slow day, pause. Remember that kindness isn’t laziness—it’s what keeps you moving forward for the long haul.
