Here, we identify the key biological and statistical challenges in current gene set analysis, which will be addressed by statisticians and biologists collectively in order to develop the next generation of gene set analysis approaches. Further, this study will serve as a catalog and provide guidelines to genome researchers and experimental biologists for choosing the proper gene set analysis approach based on several factors.Identifying communities in dynamic networks is essential for exploring the latent network structures, understanding network functions, predicting network evolution, and discovering abnormal network events. Many dynamic community detection methods have been proposed from different viewpoints. However, identifying the community structure in dynamic networks is very challenging due to the difficulty of parameter tuning, high time complexity and detection accuracy decreasing as time slices increase. In this paper, we present a dynamic community detection framework based on information dynamics and develop a dynamic community detection algorithm called DCDID (dynamic community detection based on information dynamics), which uses a batch processing technique to incrementally uncover communities in dynamic networks. DCDID employs the information dynamics model to simulate the exchange of information among nodes and aims to improve the efficiency of community detection by filtering out the unchanged subgraph. To illustrate the effectiveness of DCDID, we extensively test it on synthetic and real-world dynamic networks, and the results demonstrate that the DCDID algorithm is superior to the representative methods in relation to the quality of dynamic community detection. We propose a tensor based approach to infer causal structures from time series. An information theoretical analysis of transfer entropy (TE) shows that TE results from transmission of information over a set of communication channels. Tensors are the mathematical equivalents of these multichannel causal channels. The total effect of subsequent transmissions, i.e., the total effect of a cascade, can now be expressed in terms of the tensors of these subsequent transmissions using tensor multiplication. With this formalism, differences in the underlying structures can be detected that are otherwise undetectable using TE or mutual information. Additionally, using a system comprising three variables, we prove that bivariate analysis suffices to infer the structure, that is, bivariate analysis suffices to differentiate between direct and indirect associations. Some results translate to TE. For example, a Data Processing Inequality (DPI) is proven to exist for transfer entropy.Based on entropy characteristics, some complex nonlinear dynamics of the dynamic pressure at the outlet of a centrifugal compressor are analyzed, as the centrifugal compressor operates in a stable and unstable state. First, the 800-kW centrifugal compressor is tested to gather the time sequence of dynamic pressure at the outlet by controlling the opening of the anti-surge valve at the outlet, and both the stable and unstable states are tested. Then, multi-scale fuzzy entropy and an improved method are introduced to analyze the gathered time sequence of dynamic pressure. Furthermore, the decomposed signals of dynamic pressure are obtained using ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), and are decomposed into six intrinsic mode functions and one residual signal, and the intrinsic mode functions with large correlation coefficients in the frequency domain are used to calculate the improved multi-scale fuzzy entropy (IMFE). Finally, the statistical reliability of the method is studied by modifying the original data. After analysis of the relationships between the dynamic pressure and entropy characteristics, some important intrinsic dynamics are captured. The entropy becomes the largest in the stable state, but decreases rapidly with the deepening of the unstable state, and it becomes the smallest in the surge. Compared with multi-scale fuzzy entropy, the curve of the improved method is smoother and could show the change of entropy exactly under different scale factors. For the decomposed signals, the unstable state is captured clearly for higher order intrinsic mode functions and residual signals, while the unstable state is not apparent for lower order intrinsic mode functions. In conclusion, it can be observed that the proposed method can be used to accurately identify the unstable states of a centrifugal compressor in real-time fault diagnosis.Sensitivity analysis of selected parameters in simulation models of logistics facilities is one of the key aspects in functioning of self-conscious and efficient management. In order to develop simulation models adequate of real logistics facilities' processes, it is important to input actual data connected to material flows on entry to models, whereas most models assume unified load units as default. To provide such data, pseudorandom number generators (PRNGs) are used. The original generator described in the paper was employed in order to generate picking lists for order picking process (OPP). This ensures building a hypothetical, yet close to reality process in terms of unpredictable customers' orders. Models with applied PRNGs ensure more detailed and more understandable representation of OPPs in comparison to analytical models. Therefore, the author's motivation was to present the original model as a tool for enterprises' managers who might control OPP, devices and means of transport employed therein. The outcomes and implications of the contribution are connected to presentation of selected possibilities in OPP analyses, which might be developed and solved within the model. The presented model has some limitations. One of them is assumption that one mean of transport per one aisle is taken into consideration. Another limitation is the indirectly randomization of certain model's parameters. This paper provides readers with three partial results that are mutually connected. Firstly, the gallery of the so-called constant phase elements (CPE) dedicated for the wideband applications is presented. CPEs are calculated for 9° (decimal orders) and 10° phase steps including ¼, ½, and ¾ orders, which are the most used mathematical orders between zero and one in practice. selleck chemicals llc For each phase shift, all necessary numerical values to design fully passive RC ladder two-terminal circuits are provided. Individual CPEs are easily distinguishable because of a very high accuracy; maximal phase error is less than 1.5° in wide frequency range beginning with 3 Hz and ending with 1 MHz. Secondly, dynamics of ternary memory composed by a series connection of two resonant tunneling diodes is investigated and, consequently, a robust chaotic behavior is discovered and reported. Finally, CPEs are directly used for realization of fractional-order (FO) ternary memory as lumped chaotic oscillator. Existence of structurally stable strange attractors for different orders is proved, both by numerical analyzed and experimental measurement.selleck chemicals llc
