October 2024. For me, this marked the beginning of a new adventure, a new challenge. I had been hearing about Hacktoberfest for quite some time. My interest in open source had been brewing, and Hacktoberfest provided the perfect opportunity to transform that interest into action. So, when the announcement for Hacktoberfest came at the start of October, I decided that this time, I wouldnβt let the opportunity slip away.
Why I Joined Hacktoberfest
Coding is not just a profession for me; itβs a form of creative expression. By contributing to open source projects, we can enhance our knowledge, tackle various problems, and, most importantly, connect with developers from around the globe. This was a significant motivation for me to participate in an event like Hacktoberfest.
On one hand, it was about challenging myself, and on the other, it was about learning something new. Contributing to open source projects not only improves our skills but also allows us to help others with our work. With this perspective in mind, I joined Hacktoberfest.
Getting Started: A New Experience
Before Hacktoberfest began, I started exploring various projects on GitHub. There were countless projects on GitHub, each offering some opportunity to learn. Eventually, I stumbled upon a project that aimed to create a new web app. The purpose of the project caught my attention, and I decided to join that team. The new environment, new people, and new ideas were thrilling for me.
First Challenge: Bug Fixing
My first task was to fix a bug. At first glance, it seemed like it would be straightforward. However, once I delved into the code, I realized how complex the issue was. The code was structured in a way that required deep knowledge of multiple libraries and frameworks to solve the problem. But this turned out to be the most enjoyable part for me.
I initially thought about giving up. But then I realized that if I backed out now, I would miss the essence of this event. I began to study various documentation, watch online tutorials, and even ask questions on the Hacktoberfest forums.
Days passed, and I kept trying. Collaborating with other team members, listening to their experiences, and seeking solutions together kept me motivated. Eventually, we were able to fix that bug. That moment was invaluable for me because I realized that I had indeed accomplished something.
New Friends, New Experiences
Through Hacktoberfest, I got to meet developers from different countries. Working alongside them allowed me to develop new perspectives. Everyone was supporting one another, and through this collaboration, I learned a lot. My participation in the project was not just about enhancing my technical skills but also about building relationships.
Learning and Pride from Hacktoberfest
This month-long journey taught me how to work effectively in a real team, how to seek solutions for new problems, and how to overcome my limitations. Finally, when I received the Hacktoberfest certificate, I felt a sense of pride. It was not just a certificate; it was proof of my hard work, dedication, and willingness to learn something new.
Why Hacktoberfest Matters
In my opinion, every developer should participate in Hacktoberfest at least once. Itβs not just an event for coding; itβs an opportunity to learn something new, meet new people, and become part of the open source community. It shapes us not just as contributors but as eager learners.
Participating in Hacktoberfest helped me understand that development is not limited to writing code. It is a medium for sharing, learning, and fostering creativity.
Looking Forward to a New Journey
This experience marked the beginning of a new journey for me. I know that many more challenges lie ahead, but Hacktoberfest has taught me how to embrace each challenge. In the coming years, I hope to participate in many more Hacktoberfests, take on new challenges, and delve deeper into the world of open source.
