What's your typing speed (WPM)?

Peter Kim Frank on November 17, 2017

Just a fun thread for a Friday afternoon. Most of us spend a significant percentage of our waking hours typing away on our keyboards. But how fas...

A coworker once mocked me for not doing 10-finger typing.
I told him I was thinking faster so I could type more slowly.

He never mentioned my typing again.
And his frantic keyboard hacking slowed down considerably... ;)

I don't know about you guys, but I am really inefficient with my fingers. I mostly use my two indexes, sometimes my left thumb will hit space, sometimes it's my right index on the space bar. My pinky is always on the MAJ key. Sometimes, I'll go absolutely nuts and type something using my other fingers, but it's oh so rare.

Not that it really matters to write code but I suppose that slows me down if I tried to be as fast as possible.

I figured I'd break the ice by representing the not-so-fast typers out there:

  • WPM: 58
  • External Keyboard: Yes, the CODE Keyboard, 104 key w/ brown switches
  • QWERTY all the way

I have always been a slow, inaccurate typist (with terrible form). Fortunately I write mostly Java in IntelliJ these days which means I don't really have to type all that much :D

A person's typing speed is generally measured in words per minute (WPM). There is no definitive answer to the question of what qualifies as a "fast" typing speed, as it can vary depending on factors such as the individual's occupation, age, and level of experience. That said, a study from 2018 found that the average typing speed among all adults was 36.6 WPM.

There are a number of ways to improve one's typing speed. For beginners, mastering the proper technique is key - this means posture, grip, and finger placement should be optimized for comfort and efficiency. Once the basics have been mastered, practice makes perfect - lots of typing practice will obviously lead to an increase inspeed.
