A Comparative Analysis of Cisco and Juniper Networking Hardware

Computer networking hardware refers to the component of a computer network that allows communication and data transfer between devices. The various components of computer networking hardware include devices such as routers, switches, hubs and cables. Depending upon the requirement, various business markets such as small, medium and large, home users, use different brands of computer networking hardware. Cisco and Juniper are two big brands that provide computer networking hardware for medium and enterprise business.

To compare the routers of the same capability from different brands, Let us consider the CISCO ASR 1000 and the JUNIPER MX204. Both of these routers support high-performance routing and also possess security features such as firewall and VPN as they support medium to large businesses, they have the ability to be modular and have high port density where they differ in the operating system and throughput. JUNIPER uses Junos Operating System and CISCO uses Cisco’s IOS-XE operating system where as the throughput for JUNIPER is 800Gbps and CICSO has 100Gbps (CISCO, 2023).

Now comparing switches offered by both of the provider's CISCO Catalysts 2960-X and JUNIPER EX2300 both of them have high port density where CISCO supports 24-48 ports configurations whereas Juniper also supports 24 and 48 ports configurations with an addition to 12 port configuration both need PoE of 740W while CISCO requires PoE+ power their capacity for switching is 216 Gbps for CISCO and 128 Gbps for JUNIPER (Juniper Networks, 2023). While stacking CISCO offers stacking up to 8 switches whereas JUNIPER supports stacking of Virtual Chassis for up to 4 switches.

While CISCO being the market leader in the networking industry for a long time for small, large and enterprise workloads, I would choose Juniper as it has always been known for being more innovative and high-performing networking solutions. As CISCO provides solutions for all scales small to large it has diverse interests which might lack to provide better solutions for larger and more complex networking solutions whereas JUNIPER excels as it focuses on designing network topologies for high traffic volumes with complex structure. While comparing the two the pricing the CISCO offers are more on the pricier side than JUNIPER.
