Spherule believes that every child deserves a clean and healthy environment to learn and grow. This belief drives our WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) initiative in government-run schools. Join us as we share the story of how we are transforming schools and making a lasting impact on students' lives.
It all started with a visit to a government school in Ratnagiri. We were struck by the poor sanitation conditions—broken toilets, lack of clean water, and no proper facilities for menstrual hygiene. The students were not only struggling with their studies but also with basic hygiene. This visit was an eye-opener and marked the beginning of our mission to improve WASH facilities in schools.
We discovered that many schools faced similar issues. Inadequate sanitation facilities, lack of clean water, and poor menstrual hygiene management were common problems. Students were often asked to clean the toilets themselves, exposing them to harsh chemicals and unsanitary conditions. These challenges not only affected their health but also their attendance and academic performance.
Determined to make a difference, we developed a comprehensive approach focusing on three main areas: infrastructure development, knowledge enhancement, and behaviour change.
Our first step was to improve the infrastructure. We conducted needs assessments in each school to understand the specific requirements. We then constructed toilets that catered to all students, including girls and those with disabilities. Hand washing stations with soap and water were installed near the toilets, and disposal bins for sanitary products were provided in girls' toilets.
We believe that knowledge is power. To ensure lasting change, we organized interactive workshops and educational sessions on WASH practices and menstrual hygiene management. These sessions were designed to be engaging and informative, using activities and multimedia resources to make learning fun.
Changing behaviour is crucial for sustainable impact. We encouraged students to adopt regular hand washing, proper toilet use, and correct menstrual waste disposal. By challenging cultural taboos and promoting open dialogue, we fostered positive attitudes towards hygiene and menstruation.
Our efforts began to bear fruit. At Z.P.P.S Adarsh Kendra Shala in Ratnagiri, the school was recognized as the Cleanest School in the district. This accolade boosted the morale of students and teachers, leading to higher enrollment and regular attendance, especially among adolescent girls.
In Pune, the Municipal Corporation schools also saw significant improvements. The sanitation project not only enhanced hygiene but also created a positive and healthy learning environment.
The smiles on the faces of the students and the gratitude from the teachers were our biggest rewards.
Our journey with the WASH initiative has been incredibly rewarding. By ensuring access to clean water, proper sanitation, and hygiene education, we are paving the way for a healthier, more educated future. This initiative is a testament to the profound impact that proper sanitation and hygiene can have on education.
We invite you to join us in this mission. Together, we can create healthier learning environments for all children. For more information about the Spherule Foundation and our programs, visit our website or follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
