The Honey Controversy

I came across a video on YouTube by MegaLag titled "Exposing the Honey Influencer Scam," where he points out that Honey takes credit for any purchase you make online when using it to find coupons at checkout.

What is Honey?

For those who may not know, Honey is a browser extension and app that claims to find the best discounts for your checkout on various websites. The application gained significant attention through marketing campaigns, particularly via sponsorships with large content creators such as MrBeast , Linus Sebastian, Marques Brownlee, and more.

What are Sponsored Ads

When a content creator is sponsored to promote a specific company or product, they receive a unique affiliate link. If their audience makes a purchase through that link, the company compensates the creator with a commission. Why do you need to know this? It will make sense in a bit.

Concerns

Concerns about how Honey earns its revenue were raised by popular YouTuber Markiplier, who declined a sponsorship request from the company. While this raised some eyebrows, it did not initially gain much traction.

However, many users later discovered that Honey credits itself for purchases made by users, regardless of whether coupons were found. It was revealed that Honey replaces the identifier of the content creator with its own. So, even if you just interact with the Honey Application to search for coupons, it informs the website that it directed you to their platform. This allows Honey to earn a commission from your purchase and as a result prevents content creators from earning money through sponsorships as the company takes credits for the purchases.

I encourage you to watch MegaLag's original video for a more in-depth understanding of the situation.
