The study report focuses on the interaction of patients' complaint cases and their related physicians' responses in handling patients' complex requests based on the dynamics of power and ideology.

Data consist of 3 selected patients' complaints and 7 physicians' responses in a specialized medical care organization in December 2016. Data of the qualitative case study were used in narrative analysis.

The study revealed storylines of narratives ending in physicians' collective ideology of encounters with dissatisfied patients.

The interaction between patients' complaints and physicians' responses showed emergent patterns of conflicts, which were both constraining and enabling.

We designed a questionnaire to evaluate patient views at the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital colorectal multidisciplinary clinic to identify factors that contribute to continued follow-up at the colorectal multidisciplinary clinic. A total of 128 patients, 62% of whom were being treated with curative intent participated in the study. We found that trust in their physicians, presence of family support, and affordability of treatment were factors highly valued by patients consulting at the clinic.Sharing patient satisfaction survey results is not ideal as a stand-alone motivator for clinician behavior change. Rather, this is best combined with efforts to support clinician well-being by offering protected time to improve our communication skills, along with our ability to effectively process feedback. We present here a syllabus for teaching patient experience that draws on service sciences to address the current state of patient experience. The syllabus was the result of an ongoing collaboration between educators at the Hotel College and the School of Medicine at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. The syllabus was developed after a thorough literature review in the field of services marketing, patient experience, hospitality marketing, management and leadership, health-care administration, and health-care communication and after consultation with subject matter experts. We believe that the syllabus provides an action plan for universities and hospitals to introduce and teach the topic of hospitality and patient experience as part of the medical and nursing school curriculum. The syllabus can also be adapted for teaching in executive education programs. In this article, I narrate my experiences with telemedicine in cancer care as a medical oncology fellow-in-training during the period of enhanced community quarantine in Metro Manila due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Telemedicine has not only helped me communicate with and coordinate treatments for my patients but also offered me a way to offer encouragement and hope. This narrative piece written from a patient perspective angle who lives with a chronic condition-Beta thalassemia major (also known as Cooley's Anemia), a serious, life-long, genetic blood disorder. The narrative portrays how the present situation of COVID-19 pandemic adds an extra layer to the challenges in the lives of people living with thalassemia. This article uses mental health trends during the COVID-19 pandemic to question how we can leverage current technologies such as telehealth to provide better mental health care. Based on this compilation of literature, an increase in suicide rates, suicidal ideation, and mental health disorders is possible as a result of the impact of COVID-19. By increasing the use of telehealth and investigating best practices for its use, the outcome is 3-fold. We can provide preventative measures after the COVID-19 pandemic subsides, more effective care to patients during future pandemics and global crises, and reduce mental health care disparities by reaching rural Americans.Companion animals and pets can be helpful during the novel coronavirus-19 pandemic. Interactions with them and positive physical contact lead to a variety of physiological and psychological benefits. It also releases biochemicals which can further boost the immune system and enhance health and well-being. This perspective discusses the benefits of these interactions, the modes of interactions and the activities that can be used. read more It also highlights the individuals that should avoid this approach and the status of the animal's health before engaging with them.In recent years, rheological measurements of cells and tissues at physiological and pathological stages have become an essential method to determine how forces and changes in mechanical properties contribute to disease development and progression, but there is no standardization of this procedure so far. In this study, we evaluate the potential of nanoscale atomic force microscopy (AFM) and macroscopic shear rheometry to assess the mechanical properties of healthy and cancerous human colon tissues. The direct comparison of tissue mechanical behavior under uniaxial and shear deformation shows that cancerous tissues not only are stiffer compared to healthy tissue but also respond differently when shear and compressive stresses are applied. These results suggest that rheological parameters can be useful measures of colon cancer mechanopathology. Additionally, we extend the list of biological materials exhibiting compressional stiffening and shear weakening effects to human colon tumors. These mechanical responses might be promising mechanomarkers and become part of the new procedures in colon cancer diagnosis. Enrichment of histopathological grading with rheological assessment of tissue mechanical properties will potentially allow more accurate colon cancer diagnosis and improve prognosis.Elderly recipients (≥70 y) account for 2.6% of all liver transplants (LTs) in the United States and have similar outcomes as younger recipients. Although the rate of elderly recipients in combined liver-kidney transplant (CLKT) is similar, limited data are available on how elderly recipients perform after CLKT.
We have previously shown excellent outcomes in CLKT using delayed kidney transplant (Indiana) Approach (mean kidney cold ischemia time = 53 ± 14 h). Between 2007 and 2018, 98 CLKTs were performed using the Indiana Approach at Indiana University (IU) and the data were retrospectively analyzed. Recipients were subgrouped based on their age 18-45 (n = 16), 46-59 (n = 34), 60-69 (n = 40), and ≥70 years (n = 8).

Overall, more elderly patients received LT at IU (5.2%) when compared nationally (2.6%). The rate of elderly recipients in CLKT at IU was 8.2% (versus 2% Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipient). Recipient and donor characteristics were comparable between all age groups except recipient age and duration of dialysis.read more
