The web browser has become a central part of our daily workflow on our PC’s. Which brings up the question of which Web Browser performs the best on Linux? Since many web developers run Linux, it was an interesting question. The Web browsers that were chosen for this benchmark are based on the most popular web browsers in use as of the publishing of this article, which are (Microsoft Edge, Brave, Chromium, Google Chrome, Firefox, Vivaldi, and Opera).
Benchmark Setup
The bench-marking of the above mentioned web browsers was conducted on an AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 4750G with 64GB of DDR4 RAM running at 3200Mhz. The GPU used is an NVIDIA GTX 1650 4GB using NVIDIA Driver Version 470.141.03. The Linux Distro used is Ubuntu 22.04 running kernel 5.19.5 with GNOME 42.4 on X11. The benchmarks are from (https://browserbench.org/) using JetStream2, MotionMark, and Speedometer taking an average of 3 runs on each browser.
Benchmark Types
Speedometer:
Measures responsiveness of web applications.
JetStream:
Javascript and Web Assembly benchmark.
MotionMark
Browsers graphics test.
Scores
Browser | Version | Speedometer | JetStream | MotionMark | Total |
---|---|---|---|---|---|

Brave | 1.45.114 - Chromium: 107.0.5304.68 | 199 | 194.395 | 867.74 | 1261.135 |
Chromium | 106.0.5249.119 | 189 | 186.993 | 929.31 | 1305.303 |
Google Chrome | 107.0.5304.87 | 189 | 194.498 | 898.51 | 1282.008 |
Firefox | 106.0.3 | 151 | 115.160 | 729.51 | 995.670 |
Vivaldi | 5.5.2805.38 | 146 | 180.340 | 771.14 | 1097.480 |
Opera | 92.0.4561.30 | 146 | 177.278 | 795.38 | 1118.658 |
Conclusion
To my surprise Firefox seems to be the worst performing browser on Ubuntu. While Chromium, Google Chrome, and Brave seem to have the best overall performance on Ubuntu. My recommendation would be to avoid using Firefox on Ubuntu and stick with Brave since it is one of the top performers, uses the Chromium engine underneath and has YouTube ad blocking out of the box. Chromium and Google Chrome are also very good options and you can get ad blocker extensions for them as well.
