Athletes participating in track and field jumping events (long jump, triple jump, high jump, and pole vault) are exposed to ground-reaction forces on the takeoff leg that are several times their body weight. This can cause injuries specific to such activities.
To determine the incidence of injuries in collegiate jumpers using the guidelines set forth by a 2014 consensus statement on injury surveillance during track and field events.
Descriptive epidemiology study.
A total of 51 jumpers between April 2016 and March 2017 and 54 jumpers between April 2017 and March 2018 participated in this study. selleck chemicals llc All athletes were from a single college in Japan. Baseline information on athletes participating in the long jump, triple jump, high jump, and pole vault was collected at study enrollment. Practice and competition exposures were reported by the team trainer. Injury incidence was calculated as the number of injuries per 1000 athlete-exposures (AEs).
A total of 147 injuries were reported among 16,998 exposures (8.65 injuries per 1000 AEs). The most common injury locations were the posterior thigh and lateral ankle (17.0%), followed by the posterior foot or toe (12.9%); the most frequent type of injury was strain/muscle rupture/tear (21.1%). The most common injury for long jumpers was ankle sprain (23.3%); for high jumpers, flexor hallucis longus tendinosis (15.8%); and for pole vaulters, hamstring strain (13.2%).

Effective pain control in patients who have undergone arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery improves functional recovery and early mobilization. Interscalene blocks (ISBs), a widely used approach, are safe and provide fast pain relief; however, they are associated with complications. Another pain management strategy is the use of a suprascapular nerve block (SSNB).
We hypothesized that indwelling SSNB catheters are a more effective pain control method than single-shot ISBs. We also hypothesized that indwelling SSNB catheters will reduce the level of rebound pain and the demand for opioid analgesics.

Included in this study were 93 patients who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery between May 2012 and January 2019. These patients were assigned to either the indwelling SSNB catheter group, the single-shot ISB group, or the control (sham/placebo) group (31 patients per group). Level of pain was measured with a visual analog scale (VAS; 0 to 10 [worst p of pain were lower in the indwelling SSNB catheter group than in the single-shot ISB group.
VAS scores were the lowest in the indwelling SSNB catheter group, with the most pronounced between-group difference in VAS scores at POH 8. Severity and recurring frequency of pain were lower in the indwelling SSNB catheter group than in the single-shot ISB group.
Superior capsular reconstruction (SCR) is an alternative surgical option for young active patients with irreparable rotator cuff tears without arthritis. Although cadaveric studies have shown superior stability of the humerus, it remains unclear whether the humerus migrates superiorly after SCR in vivo.
To analyze the change in glenohumeral translation in patients before and after SCR.

A total of 22 patients who underwent SCR by a single surgeon for irreparable rotator cuff tears were included. Among them, 14 patients had intact grafts, and 8 patients were diagnosed with retears on 1-year postoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Fluoroscopy was performed in all patients preoperatively and at 3-month, 6-month, and 1-year follow-up. Moreover, 3-dimensional bone models from computed tomography, MRI, and fluoroscopic scans during scapular plane abduction of the shoulder joints were analyzed.
In the intact graft group, 3-dimensional dynamic shoulder kinematrative AHD could be helpful for postoperative humeral head translation recovery.
SCR with intact grafts resulted in decreased humeral head superior translation after 6 months. Patients with retears showed no improvement in humeral head superior translation. Patients with a preoperative AHD less then 6 mm had less improvement in humeral head superior translation than did those with a preoperative AHD ≥6 mm. Early surgical treatment before an excessive decrease in preoperative AHD could be helpful for postoperative humeral head translation recovery.
Although citation analysis is common in many areas of medicine, there is a lack of similar research in sports and exercise medicine.
To identify and examine the characteristics of the 100 top cited articles in the field of sports and exercise medicine in an effort to determine what components make an article highly influential.
Cross-sectional study.
The Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed databases were used to determine the 100 top cited articles from 46 journals in the field of sports and exercise medicine. Each of the 100 articles was then analyzed by 2 independent reviewers, and results were compared. Basic information was collected, including journal title, country of origin, and study type. Different categories were compared using descriptive statistics of counts or percentages.
The 100 top cited articles were published in 15 of the 46 identified sports and exercise medicine journals, with the most prolific being
(n = 49),
(n = 18), and
(n = 7). In terms of country of origin, the top 3 contributors were the United States (n = 65), Canada (n = 9), and Sweden (n = 8). The most commonly researched anatomic areas were the knee (n = 15) and the brain (n = 3). Narrative reviews were the most common study type (n = 38), and only a single study on the 100 top cited articles list used a randomized controlled trial design. The most prevalent fields of study were exercise science (55% of articles) and well-being (16% of articles).
Narrative reviews from the United States and published in English-language journals were the most likely to be highly cited. In addition, the knee was a common anatomic area of study on the top cited list of research in sports and exercise medicine.
