2020 has been a good year for my personal projects. I launched one that I’d be thinking about for a decade within a month of starting to build it and now thanks to the hackathon I’m the cusp of getting another finished.
For a while I’ve wanted to build a visual timeline for the music production duo, The Neptunes. I’ve been a fan of their for 20 years or so and having an archive of their work has been a goal of mine for a while. I’ve just never made the time to sit down and get it done.
Getting started
I’ve manually mined the data and massaged it so it’s easier to use when creating a template.
I toyed with the idea of picking up Vue or React but in all honesty both are overkill. I did start with Vue, but modern JavaScript comes with everything I need for this project so I’ve gone for a Vanilla JS solution instead. I’ve now got basic filtering and searching done and once the data is loaded everything happens in the browser.
What’s next?
I’ll be linking out to where you can stream or buy the music listed and updating the data provider to include artwork as only a handful have something at the moment. Got to improve a design a bit too as it works but it’s not as good as I want it to be yet!

Still work to do but the UI is pretty close to what it will be now I think. Bit of spacing needs updating and then I’ll start fetching the artwork for each album!
Always the last 10% that takes so much time to complete!
