I got an inspirational video of Herbie Hancock talking about playing music with Miles Davis. I'll let the video speak for itself:

My first day at my first real dev job, I went to lunch with my boss. We were wrapping up and I cracked open my fortune cookie, and in it was the usual slip of paper. It read: "Always know what is expected of you."

So I asked him what his expectations of me were. This led to the two of us sitting there for almost another hour, talking and I was scribbling notes. Those notes became the cornerstone of that job. By the end of my three years there, I was leading what was left of the dev team and running project management (this was the dot-com blowout of 2001).

I still have that little scrap of paper. I've made it my mantra in my professional life, and it's served me well.
