Higher depressive symptoms of the third trimester were associated with significantly smaller right amygdalar volumes in boys compared to girls. Altogether, our data suggest that offspring limbic brain development might be affected by maternal depressive symptoms in early pregnancy, and might also be more vulnerable to depressive symptoms in late pregnancy in boys compared to girls.
Although there are several studies on maternal sensitivity of preterm-born children conducted in Western countries, the factors affecting the sensitivity of mothers of preterm infants have not been investigated outside the Western context.
This study aimed to compare maternal sensitivity of preterm children at 18 months of corrected age with their healthy term-born peers and explore the factors associated with maternal sensitivity in a middle-income non-Western country. Moreover, the associations of maternal sensitivity with socio-demographic factors, maternal depression, and social-emotional competency and behavior problems of infants were investigated.
In total, 70 (40 preterm-born and 30 term-born) mother-child dyads participated in this study. An observation-based measurement tool, Maternal Sensitivity Scale, was used to assess maternal sensitivity. Social-emotional competency and behavior problems of infants were evaluated via The Turkish version of the Brief Infant-Toddler Social Emotional Assessmrs associated with the maternal sensitivity of preterm infants outside the Western context. Interventions to improve sensitive parenting behaviors of preterm infants are needed, especially in socio-economically disadvantaged groups.The prevalence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been globally gained increasing concerns. However, the fate and spread of ARGs in food waste (FW) and its large-scale biotreatment systems are seldomly understood. Here, we investigated the initial and biologically treated FW in two major FW treatment systems of aerobic fermentation (AF) and anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) processes. The total relative abundances of integrons and ARGs significantly increased from initial FW to treated FW. Among targeted ARGs, ermB and strB were predominant ARGs, which accounted for 52.58-95.28% of total abundance across all samples. Mantel test indicated that integrons (intl1 and intl2) were positively and significantly correlated with detected ARGs (Mantel test, r = 0.24, p less then 0.05), suggesting integrons display significant contributions on driving ARG alteration during FW treatment processes. RDA results indicated that blaOXA, strB and blaTEM were more likely to be proliferated by potential host of Firmicutes (96.55-99.77%) in initial FW, while blaCTX-M and mefA were potentially enriched by Proteobacteria (17.12-49.82%) in AF system and ermB, sul1, aadA and tetQ were possibly enhanced by Bacteroidetes (27.43-43.71%) in AcoD system. Consideration of the higher enriched abundance of total ARGs (66.88 ± 87.34 times) and the used inoculum sludge in AcoD-treated system, the resource utilization of anaerobically digested products should draw our more attentions. These findings would deepen our understanding of prevalence and proliferation of ARGs in FW treatment systems and serve as a foundation for guiding the application of biologically treated FW.Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are ubiquitous in the environment, making it inevitable for humans to be exposed to these pollutants. The exposure begins while in utero and continues in infancy, during the potentially most sensitive early stages of life. This review summarizes the current knowledge on pre- and neo-natal exposures based on more than 200 articles published from 2000 to date. All relevant biological matrices used in the cited studies were included, such as maternal blood, umbilical cord blood, breast milk, placenta, amniotic fluid, fetal organs, newborns' dried blood spots, and infant serum. We show that such exposures are geographically global with significant discrepancies among countries and continents, and that while the levels of major legacy PFASs (PFOS and PFOA) have declined since 2000, those of others may have not. We also show that levels of PFOS and PFOA exceed those of some major environmental toxins, such as p,p'-DDE, BDE-47, PCB-153, PBB-153, and OH-PBDEs in maternal blood. Given that the behavior and potential effects have an origin in molecular structure, biomonitoring and research at the levels of isomers and enantiomers are critically important. Through critical analysis of these works, we summarize the major achievements, consensus, and the deficiencies of existing research. To our knowledge, this is the first review on the overall internal exposure status of mothers and infants to PFASs during pregnancy and lactation.Regulation of chemicals with endocrine disrupting properties depend on the use of the chemical rather than its intrinsic properties. Within the EU, the only criteria currently in place for identifying an endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) are those developed for biocidal and plant protection products. We argue that ECHA/EFSA guidance for assessing endocrine disrupting properties of biocidal and plant protection products can be applied to all chemicals independent of their intended use. We have assessed the REACH-registered compound butylparaben (CAS 94-36-8), a preservative used primarily in cosmetics. Based on scientific evidence of adverse reproductive effects and endocrine activity, the open literature suggest that butylparaben is an EDC. By applying the ECHA/EFSA guidance for pesticides and biocides, we identify butylparaben as a compound with endocrine disrupting properties. Even though available data is markedly different from that for biocides and pesticides, it was possible to reach this conclusion. More generally, we propose that the ECHA/EFSA guidance can and should be used for identification of EDC regardless of their intended application.Most epidemiological studies usually employ ambient air pollutant concentrations as a proxy of personal exposure to air pollutants originating outdoors, which could lead to a biased estimation of health effects. Herein, we modeled infiltration and exposure factors as the modifications of personal exposure to ambient PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, and SO2 for all seasons, genders, and ages in 31 Chinese provinces. The annual average exposure factors of PM10, PM2.5, O3, NO2, and SO2 were 0.42 ± 0.13 (arithmetic mean ± standard deviation), 0.68 ± 0.14, 0.34 ± 0.12, 0.50 ± 0.14, and 0.40 ± 0.13, respectively.
