For apical periodontitis treatments, a new method with the insertion of an electrode into the root canal of a tooth and application of a current at 500 kHz to sterilize the area by Joule heat has attracted attention. However, few studies have quantified the temperature increase in the root canal. This study aimed to investigate the basic characteristics of the temperature increase in a simple and standard tooth model when energizing a current at 500 kHz to the numerical tooth model with typical electrical and physical properties. We developed a numerical model of a standard tooth (dentin) and periodontal tissues consisting of an alveolar bone, cortical bone, and gingiva, and physiological saline in a root canal and calculated the temperature increase inside the numerical model by a coupled analysis of current and heat when a voltage was applied across the electrodes. The calculated results for the different applied voltages showed a temperature increase at the apical portion of the root canal, which increased with the applied voltage even for the same total supplied energy. The temperature increase occurred at the apical portion of the root canal as the tooth conductivity decreased. When the tooth conductivity was high, a current passed through the dentin, which led to a decrease in the temperature at the apical portion of the root canal. However, a chemical solution with a higher conductivity in the root canal tended to increase the temperature at the apical portion of the root canal, regardless of the tooth conductivity. More efficient approaches for increasing the spatial and temporal temperature for the tooth model target are needed. © 2021 Bioelectromagnetics Society.Stomatal movements via the control of gas exchanges determine plant growth in relation to environmental stimuli through a complex signalling network involving reactive oxygen species that lead to post-translational modifications of Cys and Met residues, and alter protein activity and/or conformation. Thiol-reductases (TRs), which include thioredoxins, glutaredoxins (GRXs) and peroxiredoxins (PRXs), participate in signalling pathways through the control of Cys redox status in client proteins. Their involvement in stomatal functioning remains poorly characterized. By performing a mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis, we show that numerous thiol reductases, like PRXs, are highly abundant in guard cells. When investigating various Arabidopsis mutants impaired in the expression of TR genes, no change in stomatal density and index was noticed. In optimal growth conditions, a line deficient in cytosolic NADPH-thioredoxin reductases displayed higher stomatal conductance and lower leaf temperature evaluated by thermal infrared imaging. In contrast, lines deficient in plastidial 2-CysPRXs or type-II GRXs exhibited compared to WT reduced conductance and warmer leaves in optimal conditions, and enhanced stomatal closure in epidermal peels treated with abscisic acid or hydrogen peroxide. Altogether, these data strongly support the contribution of thiol redox switches within the signalling network regulating guard cell movements and stomatal functioning.Schizophrenia is one of the major neuropsychiatric disorders affecting people worldwide. Unfortunately, currently available antipsychotic medications possess several side effects. Among them, clozapine is one of the atypical antipsychotics prescribed in schizophrenia wing to its blocking effect on dopamine (D2) and serotonin (5-HT1c ) receptors. However, it has been recently reserved for resistant schizophrenia due to its several side effects. The current research aimed at investigating potential naringin add-on benefit to cease the main side effects of clozapine in ketamine-induced psychosis in rats. In this study, schizophrenia was induced in rats via ketamine administration that could promote neuropathological patterns of schizophrenia. Afterwards, clozapine and naringin were administered to rats in order to improve such effects induced by ketamine. Clozapine administration promoted weight gain, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and agranulocytosis. However, naringin was able to reduce such adverse effects when added to clozapine treatment. Naringin increased total leukocyte count preventing agranulocytosis either when administered alone or in combination with clozapine. In addition, via its metabolic activities, naringin treatment lowered serum total cholesterol and triglycerides levels. Moreover, naringin prevented weight gain when administered. Finally, naringin reduced serum glucose level preventing hyperglycemia associated with clozapine treatment. Collectively, these findings may suggest that naringin possesses a potential add-on benefit to clozapine in treatment of schizophrenia.With an aging global population and changes in family structure, there will be a need for increased formal and informal caregivers for family members with alzheimer's disease or other related dementias. Caregivers experience exhaustion, mental health issues, and competing demands; deciding to admit family members with dementia into long-term care compounds the stress. The article reports on factors that influence caregivers' decisions regarding institutionalizing their family members with dementia. Eighteen articles were included in this integrative review. Influential decision-making factors were caregiver characteristics, care recipient characteristics, complexity of care, caregiver and family relationships, experiences with healthcare providers, financial challenges, and long-term care facility selection. Addressing these factors can provide a layer of support to caregivers and their families during the decision-making process.
Egg yolk, as a natural emulsifier, is widely used in high-oil-phase food systems, such as mayonnaise and salad. However, the application of egg yolk in an oil-in-water system is still limited due to poor emulsifying stability. Torin 1 To improve the emulsifying capacity of egg yolk, the effect of chitosan addition sequence and concentration on emulsifying properties (creaming stability, thermal tolerance and oxidation resistance) of egg yolk hydrolysates were investigated.
Stacking sequence of multilayer materials has an influence on properties of composite emulsions. The composite emulsions with egg yolk hydrolysis dominate at the interface (functioning on reducing interfacial tension), and chitosan layered on the surface (providing steric hindrance) displayed better stability.
