We investigated whether measurement of muscle quantity/quality has additional predictive value for postoperative complications and long-term survival after gastrectomy for gastric cancer in patients with probable sarcopenia, as defined by the new European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 consensus.
We conducted a prospective study of patients who underwent a radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer between August 2014 and June 2019. Muscle strength was measured using a handgrip dynamometer. Computed tomography images at the third lumbar vertebra level were used to assess muscle quantity and quality by the measuring cross-sectional muscle area and mean muscle attenuation, respectively. Probable sarcopenia was defined by low muscle strength. Sarcopenia was diagnosed by additional low muscle quantity or quality. Clinical outcomes were obtained by prospective data collection and follow up.
Probable sarcopenia was identified in 419 patients, including 285 patients with sarcopenia. Patients with sarcopenia had a higher incidence of postoperative complications, higher costs, longer length of postoperative hospital stay, and worse overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) compared with patients with low muscle strength only. The multivariate logistic analysis showed that sarcopenia and hypoproteinemia were independent risk factors for postoperative complications in patients with probable sarcopenia. Moreover, multivariate Cox analyses showed that sarcopenia remained an independent risk factor for OS and DFS in patients with probable sarcopenia.

The aim of this study was to investigate association between consumption of camel milk (CaM) and childhood anemia.
A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted with 388 preschool children (24-59 mo of age) in rural pastoral districts of Somali, eastern Ethiopia. We sampled 185 consumers of CaM and 203 who consumed bovine milk (BM). Children were selected from random households with lactating camels or cattle. Hemoglobin (Hb) was measured in the field using a HemoCue instrument. A multivariable logistic regressions model was used in SPSS version 20 to examine association between type of milk consumption and anemia.
Anemia (Hb <11 g/dL) was found in 59.8% of the overall sample, whereas it was 42.7% and 75.4% among CaM and BM consumers, respectively. The odds of anemia among BM consumers (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 3.12; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.27-7.66) and children with intestinal parasites (aOR 3.32; 95% CI, 1.39-7.91) was compared with CaM consumers and children without intestinal parasites, respectively. Increasing age and height-for-age z-score of children were associated with decreased childhood anemia (P < 0.001). Children with anemia consumed a higher volume of BM compared with non-anemic and CaM consumers, too but the consumption was not statistically significant.
CaM consumption was associated with lower prevalence of anemia compared with consumption of BM. Promoting use of CaM as complementary food for preschool children in pastoralist areas might be considered an intervention toward reducing anemia.

Twelve-week-old male C57 BL/6 J mice (fed a high-fat diet, obese father [ObFa], or control diet, lean father [LFa]) were mated with female mice fed only the control diet. Mothers were trained (TMo) or untrained (UMo) swimming for 6 wk before and the first 2 wk of gestation. Pups were fed only the control diet.
Fathers showed different body mass (BM) at copulation, but not the mothers. The ObFa had 20% higher BM than the LFa. find more Twelve-week-old ObFa/UMo offspring showed a higher BM gain than the LFa/UMo and ObFa/TMo. There was BM sexual dimorphism in the LFa/UMo (female mice +24% than male mice). There was hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia in the ObFa/UMo, but low glycemia and insulin levels were seen in the ObFa/TMo. There was augmented liver steatosis in the ObFa/UMo compared with the LFa/UMo, and the ObFa/TMo compared with the LFa/TMo, but reduced steatosis in the ObFa/TMo compared with the ObFa/UMo. In addition, lipogenic markers were more expressed and beta-oxidation markers less expressed in the ObFa/UMo compared with the LFa/UMo, but the opposite was observed in the ObFa/TMo compared with the ObFa/UMo. Proinflammatory markers were higher in the liver of the ObFa/UMo compared with the LFa/UMo and lower in the ObFa/TMo compared with the ObFa/UMo.
