A novel membrane structure composed of cross-hatched electrospun nanofibers is developed. We illustrate that this novel structure allows for much higher water permeability when used as a support for reverse osmosis thin-film composite membranes. Reinforcement and lamination of the aligned nanofibers generates mechanically robust structures that retain very high porosity and low tortuosity when applied to high pressure desalination operations. The cross-hatched nanofiber layers support the polyamide active layer firmly and reduce resistance to water flow due to the high porosity, low tortuosity, high mechanical strength, and minimal thickness of the structures. The nanofiber composite membrane gives a water flux significantly greater than when a traditional support layer is used, at 99 ± 5 m-2 h-1 with NaCl rejection of 98.7% at 15.5 bar.Peripheral immunity is thought to be dysregulated in Parkinson's disease (PD) and may provide an avenue for novel immunotherapeutic interventions. Gut microbiota is a potential factor for modulating immunotherapy response. Considering the possibly complex role of the gut-brain axis in PD, we used a preclinical model to determine the effects of gut microbiota dynamics in mice receiving an immunotherapeutic intervention compared to controls. A total of 17 M83 heterozygous transgenic mice were used in this study. Mice in the treatment arm (N = 10) received adoptive cellular therapy (ACT) by injection, and control mice (N = 7) were injected with saline at 8 weeks of age. All mice received peripheral α-syn fibrils to hasten parkinsonian symptoms via an intramuscular injection 1 week later (9 weeks of age; baseline). Fecal pellets were collected from all mice at three time points postinjection (baseline, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks). DNA from each stool sample was extracted, and 16S rDNA was amplified, sequenced, and analyzed using QIIME2 and RStudio. see more Differences in the relative abundance of bacterial taxa were observed over time between groups. No significant differences in alpha diversity were found between groups at any time point. UniFrac measures of phylogenetic distance between samples demonstrated distinct clustering between groups postbaseline (p = 0.002). These differences suggest that the gut microbiome may be capable of influencing immunotherapy outcomes. Conclusively, we observed distinctly different microbiota dynamics in treated mice compared to those in the control group. These results suggest a correlation between the gut-brain axis, PD pathology, and immunotherapy.Nanozymes as one of artificial enzymes show many advantages than natural enzymes. The high Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) to H2O2 is the drawback for nanozymes, which means a high H2O2 concentration to oxidize 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). For this problem, FeS2/SiO2 double mesoporous hollow spheres (DMHSs) were first synthesized as an artificial peroxidase through a solid reaction. The experimental results demonstrate that Fe3O4 vulcanization and DMHS formation were effective strategies to enhance affinity to H2O2 for the nanozyme. The Km of FeS2/SiO2 DMHSs (H2O2 as the substrate) is 18-fold smaller than that of FeS2 nanoparticles (NPs). The catalytic efficiency (Kcat/Km) of FeS2/SiO2 DMHSs is about 16 times higher than that of FeS2 NPs. FeS2/SiO2 DMHSs can be used as a nanozyme to sensitively and rapidly detect H2O2 and glutathione within 1 min at room temperature.Erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp (EPDS) is a rare inflammatory condition commonly associated with antecedent iatrogenic insult. EPDS may be diagnostically challenging owing to a lack of pathognomonic histologic findings and cutaneous manifestations that overlap with alternative dermatologic conditions. Therefore, EPDS may be more common than previously recognized. We present a 60-year-old woman with a four-year history of non-healing scalp erosions, progressive skin atrophy, and scarring alopecia despite intravenous antibiotics and intraoperative debridement who improved with systemic glucocorticoids. Our report emphasizes the importance of early recognition of EPDS when delayed wound healing and erosive disease occur in the setting of iatrogenic injury to the scalp. Timely treatment with systemic anti-inflammatory agents is paramount to prevent cicatricial alopecia and mitigate further scalp insult in EPDS.Pemphigus has been associated with other autoimmune and autoinflammatory disorders. Specifically, some case reports in the literature document coexistence of pemphigus with psoriasis, but this association is lacking larger scale investigation. With this in mind, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the association between pemphigus and psoriasis. In doing so, we found an association between the two conditions. Pemphigus was more common in patients with psoriasis than in controls (OR 2.64, 95% CI 1.24-5.59, P=0.01), with heterogeneity (I2=94%). We go on to propose pathophysiologic mechanisms and its relevance for diagnostic and management considerations. The approach to nasal reconstruction is based on the nature of the defect and the donor tissue. The Rintala flap, first described by Rintala and Asko-Slejavaara, is a surgical technique used to close midline nasal defects. It is a simple, one-stage procedure and is most effective for defects ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters. In addition, the Rintala flap is an excellent tissue match and maintains the natural contour of the nose. Other flaps employed in nasal defect closure include the paramedian forehead flap and the Rieger flap. The authors discuss the Rintala flap technique and utility with comparison to alternative flaps used for nasal reconstruction. We describe an 84-year-old man presenting with a solitary, well-circumscribed, chronic erosion of the sole. Histopathologic examination confirmed diagnosis of circumscribed palmoplantar hypokeratosis. Circumscribed palmoplantar hypokeratosis is a rare and benign condition of unknown etiology presenting as an erosion on the palms or soles. Although lesions are typically asymptomatic, the entity is important for dermatologists and providers in other specialties to recognize, especially considering a differential diagnosis that includes neoplasia.see more
