Music Monday — What are you listening to? (Covers Edition)

cover image source: Giphy

Ya gotta love a good cover song! For those who haven't heard the term, a cover song is when somebody remakes a song that was already created and released by someone else; you can read about cover versions here on Wikipedia. Notably, I've sometimes heard folks distinguish "cover versions" of songs from "tribute versions" by saying that a tribute tries to stay true to the original, but a cover regularly puts its own spin on the material. That said, I think all tribute songs are cover songs, but not all covers are tributes. Hope that makes sense! Anywho, whether it's a tribute song that is a made to be a replica of the original, or a cover song that sounds almost entirely different, I wanna hear some covers!

This freaking rocks hard! I'm digging it. 🤘

I really like the epic droning vocals and sludgey guitars. Such a cool take on the original! They even throw in the Iron Man riff!!

Side note: the album title "The Origin of the Feces" is freaking hilarious. That one brought out the child in me, haha!

Type O Negative is one of my favorite bands and Black Sabbath was one of the first bands I met in high school, so this cover is a passion's union. Also when I met the album "The Origin of Feces" with the original censored cover I was shocked and thought it was an amazing idea.

Ooooo, this gives me an idea! I'm gonna do a version of Music Monday for best album titles... maybe covers too. Might even have to bust that out next week!

On the note of Black Sabbath covers, I really love this one of "Changes" by Charles Bradley. Also, the story of why he chose to sing the song is just heartbreakingly beautiful... it puts the performance on a whole other level.

OMG! This is so beautiful! This is literally giving me chills, the voice, the guitar... it's just so beautiful🥺

Right!!?? It's incredible. I love it so much. 💚

And I'm glad you pointed out the guitar too, cause his voice is definitely freaking amazing and takes center stage, but the accompaniment with just one guitar makes it feel even more personal and impactful. With so few instruments, it really captures the passion in his voice and underlines the vulnerability of the message he is communicating.

Anywho, appreciate ya chiming in, I'm so glad you dig this one too!

The "Summer Breeze" cover they did in that classic dirge style is another classic track.

One of the funniest things i've ever seen is the After Dark DVD with the band commentary, they are absolutely fricking hilarious as a band, such a tragedy we lost Peter Steele.

Summer Breeze is another great one! I also have watched After Dark with the band commentary and loved every moment. Peter Steele was a giant genius.

Wow, this is dope!

It's so dreamy. I'm curious if this would fall in the dream pop world? I got a friend who was describing the genre to me recently and I feel like this song would fit!

I'm not sure about genres. I guess that makes sense, though their regular stuff is more like crossing dream pop with shoegaze or something :)

Right on! That makes sense.

In fact, same friend who brought dream pop to me was describing his musical tastes and def mentioned shoegaze... I'm gonna have to ask him for some suggestions again so I can share'em with ya.

Brass Against has brought me a stream of joyful covers over the years. They released a new video of Tool's "Sober" recently, but I find myself regularly revisiting this arrangement/performance of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song". The brass, the vocals, so good.

Thanks for this series btw, 87 parts?! 😮

Wow, great suggestion. This is badass!! 🔥

Never heard this group and I'm loving'em. Looks like got some listening to catch up on now, haha. 😀

Speaking of cool brass-heavy groups, you might enjoy MEUTE. They're essentially a marching band that plays techno and house music... and it's very visual thing as well!

And haha, we are indeed 87 posts deep now! As long as I'm here (and don't forget 😅) you can count on me to share a new one when Monday comes around.

Anywho, thanks for dropping in with this awesome recommendation and hope to see you here again! 🙌

Dang!! I like these a lot.

That Rolling in the Deep cover is pretty damn epic.

And hahaha, I feel you on being hooked on the Synthwave. Note that The Midnight has been up to some cool stuff recently too. They're touring all over the place and even putting out a freaking graphic novel soon!

But outside of The Midnight, if you're looking for more synthwave/retrowave stuff, I recommend checking out Jonathan Belle's channel... he does these cool track reviews where he drives around LA and introduces new songs. It's a good way to find new stuff! Here's an example for ya...

This guy is very interesting, he made a version of a song at the end of the year with the hottest songs of the year using a "different" way of putting them together and making just one:
